Passport Related Services

A Bangladesh passport is a travel document issued by the Government of Bangladesh only to its citizens for the purpose of international travel. It must be either in the custody of the bearer or of a person duly authorized by its bearer. If lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances must be immediately reported to the nearest Bangladesh Mission and to the local police authorities.

Passport related services are rendered in the following categories:

Application Process for MRP

    Bangladeshi passport holders are highly encouraged to replace their existing hand-written passports with Machine Readable Passport (MRP) keeping in mind that hand-written passports phased out and is not accepting many countries in the world from 24 November of 2015.

An MRP contains 48 pages and shall remain valid for 5 (five) years.

MRP applicants are requested to read the following instructions very carefully.

Requirement for MRP

To obtain MRP, an applicant must possess of the following documents:

  1. Bangladesh National ID (NID) card or;
  2. Birth Registration Certificate containing 17-digit Birth Registration Number (BRN).
  3. Copies of applicant’s existing Bangladesh Passport database page (valid or expired) along with the original passport itself;
  4. A passport-size white background photo (55mmx45mm) of the applicant must be affixed with the MRP application form.
  5. Duly filled-in MRP Application Form (UPPERCASE letters) Application Form ;
  6. Hong Kong / Macau or Taiwan Identity Card copy; and
  7. Applicable payment for MRP fees;
Requirement for MRP under 15 years old and newborn
  1. Bangladesh Birth Registration Certificate containing 17-digit Birth Registration Number (BRN)
  2. Hong Kong Birth Registration Certificate (if born in Hong Kong);
  3. Copies of applicant’s existing Bangladesh Passport database page (valid or expired) along with the original passport itself;
  4. Parent’s passport database copy and marriage certificate copy (if necessary);
  5. Copy of student ID card/student book where mention in applicant’s name
  6. 03 (three) copies passport-size white background photo (55mmx45mm) of the applicant where 01 copy must be affixed with the MRP application form and another 02 fresh copy submission for the MRP purpose.
  7. The applicant’s parent’s passport-size white background photo (55mmx45mm) is required to be appended on the application form. In certain cases, either of the parent’s photos would be accepted;
  8. Duly filled-in MRP Application Form (UPPERCASE letters) Application Form;
  9. Hong Kong / Macau or Taiwan Identity Card copy;
  10. Applicable payment for MRP fees;

     The Consulate reserves the right to request for any additional documents at any stage of MRP service delivery process.

    However, if the applicants are not in possession of Birth Registration Certificate containing 17-digit birth registration number, they may arrange to get it from their respective City Corporations/ Municipalities/ Union Parishads in Bangladesh.

    Alternatively, any Bangladeshi nationals living in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan can apply to this Consulate for Birth Registration Number (BRN).

Procedure for Obtaining MRP

To apply for MRP, an applicant needs to follow the steps stated below:

Step-1: Collect and duly fill in MRP application form click here.

    Prior to coming to the Consulate in person for biometric data, an applicant is strongly encouraged to duly fill in the application form following the instructions stated in page 4 of the Application Form.

    After submission of application online, an applicant needs to contact the Consulate for making an appointment within 15 days of submission, failing to do so will cause automatic removal of the applicant’s record from the system. An applicant has to report to the Consulate on the date of appointment for providing biometric data along with a printed version of the Online Application Form and other necessary documents.

Step-2: Making Appointment

    As an applicant has to provide biometric data in person, the applicant is advised to make a prior appointment with the Consulate to obtain a date and time for the same (Telephone: +852 28274278, +852 28274279).

Step-3: Submission of MRP application form

    The applicant shall come to the Consulate in person at least 20 minutes earlier on the confirmed date and time for submission as well as check out MRP application form and to provide biometric data.

The applicant must submit the following to get MRP:

  • Duly filled-in MRP Application Form (UPPERCASE letters);
  • A photo copy of his/her National ID card or Birth Registration Certificate containing 17-digit Birth Registration Number (BRN)
  • Copies of applicant’s existing Bangladesh Passport database page (valid or expired) along with the original passport itself;
  • Payment of applicable fees;

    A passport-size white background photo (55mmx45mm) of the applicant must be affixed with the MRP application form. If the applicant is a child under the age of 15, parents’ photos are required to be appended on the application form. In certain cases, either of the parent’s photos would be accepted.

    Appended Photo on the application form needs to be attested by a competent attester. Half of the signature and seal should be on the photo and the other half on the application form. Address and seal of the attester must be provided at page-4 of the form.

Certification/Attestation at page-4 of the MRP application form:

    It requires that all applicants get certification/attestation from a competent attester about their identity. In case of difficulty in obtaining certification in Bangla, applicants may translate this part of the application form into English in a separate sheet of paper and obtain signature from the certifier and then submit it to the Consulate along with the application form.

Step-4: Biometric Enrolment Process

    Applicant’s finger prints, signature in electronic pad and photograph will be taken at the bio-enrolment room of the Consulate. Once completed, existing Bangladesh Passport of the applicant will be returned along with the delivery slip.

    After the bio-enrolment, all data and scanned application form along with other documents will be sent electronically to the Department of Immigration & Passport in Dhaka where, after due process, MRP will be issued and printed. It will then be sent to the Consulate for delivery to the applicant.

Step-5: Delivery of passport

    After completion of the enrolment process, the applicant will be given a tentative date of delivery of MRP. Average processing time at the Department of Immigration & Passport in Dhaka for express delivery and regular delivery of passports is 15 days and 30 days respectively. However, it may take 21-28 days for express delivery and 40-45 days for regular delivery of MRP depending upon the schedule of Diplomatic Bag.

    Applicants are advised to contact the Consulate over telephone for confirmation of arrival of their passports from Dhaka. Upon confirmation from the Consulate, the applicant shall need to come to the Consulate in person along with his or her old Bangladesh Passport and delivery slip. New MRP will be handed over along with the old passport (with observation or cancellation seal) after taking signature on the acknowledgement of receipt, new MRP shall be handed over to the applicant only.

    * Students are entitled to get MRP at a concession rate. To avail this opportunity, students must present a valid student's ID and submit a copy of it along with the application form and other documents. In case a student does not have a valid student ID, a letter from his/her institution can also be accepted where the reference number on the letter can be used in the ID field of MRP programme/software. It is mandatory to provide Student ID for concessional rate else a student applicant will have to pay regular fees.

Data Correction in MRP

Change of Information in MRP

    Due to some personal circumstances an applicant may like to change some of the information in the MRP. But it is not possible to change such information manually in MRP rather a new MRP will be required. To change information like changing of names, permanent address, profession, age, marital status, the following supporting documents must be provided:

MRP Re-issue

    Currently, the MPR is valid for 5 years and it is not renewable like the hand-written passport. As such, MRP should be reissued once the validity is about to expire. More so, MRP needs to be re-issued when someone has lost his/her present MRP. In all such cases, the information of the previous MRP must remain unchanged. Please note that any change of information in the new MRP will require proper documentation as mentioned before.

Requirements for MRP reissue against an expired MRP:

    Requirements for MRP reissue against an expired MRP will be as same as new application; applicant no need to apply online for reissue; they manually filled in MRP application form (please click here to find the form). The old passport will be cancelled on issuance of MRP.

    If the MRP is retained by the Hong Kong Government, a copy of the same duly certified by Hong Kong government Office should be provided along with the new MRP application.

  • Appointment Booking: You need to have an appointment for the MRP re-issue. Please call (+852 28274278, +852 28274279) this number to make an appointment.
  • MRP re-issue fee (non-refundable): MRP re-issue fee is as same as new passport fee (see above).
  • Processing time and delivery of passport: Processing time is as same as new passport application (see above).

    Note-1: An applicant, who has attained more than 6 years of age but his/her biometric information was not recorded being a minor in the previous MRP, must have the biometric enrolment during the MRP re-issue.

MRP against Lost Passport

    Applicants, who wish to apply for MRP against their lost Bangladesh passport, are requested to come to the Consulate for interview. The applicants have to bring the following documents for interview:

  • Application for issuance of new passport (MRP);
  • Police report from local Police Station on loss of passport (translated into English);
  • Photocopy of the passport including the visa page;
  • Photocopy of the work permit or any other document in support of applicant’s stay-status in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

    The candidates should follow the procedure for the issuance of MRP upon successful interview.

    Requirements for MRP reissue against lost MRP will be as same as new application; applicant no need to apply online for reissue; they manually filled in MRP application form (please click here to find the form). The old passport will be cancelled on issuance of MRP.
